Younger men may be more focused on increasing physical strength, muscle strength, or body composition and recovery in the areas of sports nutrition. Middle-aged men may seek to improve focus and productivity. While older men are more likely to focus on diseases such as heart disease, prostate cancer, and how to cope with aging joints and muscles.

Energy and exercise performance

Energy and exercise performance

  • Creatine is currently the most widely used energizer among athletes looking to build muscle and promote recovery. Creatine has been shown to be effective in repetitive, short-duration, high-intensity exercise, such as sprinting and weightlifting, but not in endurance exercise, such as long-distance running. [1]
  • The underlying functional role of caffeine may be closely related to its effect as a CNS stimulant and the associated reduction in effort perception.
  • Sodium bicarbonate may be an effective synergist (role in acid-base balance and fatigue prevention) as a blood buffer.
  • Protein and amino acid supplements are important for athletes and sports enthusiasts. For example, whey protein is used either as a supplement in conjunction with resistance exercise or as part of a weight loss or weight maintenance diet to improve body composition parameters. [2]

Heart health

According to 2017 data from the Centers for Disease Control, the leading cause of death among men in the United States was heart disease, at 24.2 percent. An overview of preclinical and clinical studies states that nutraceutical interventions can be very beneficial in preventing/reducing cardiovascular disease and related diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart attack and stroke. [3] Nutrients like antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and plant sterols can help with high blood pressure. Nutrients, including soluble fiber, soy protein, and plant sterols, have the potential to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men in the United States. Interestingly, studies have found that some nutraceuticals can modulate the function of cancer stem cell (CSC)-associated miRNAs and related molecules, leading to inhibition of prostate cancer stem cells. A schematic diagram of the effects of nutraceuticals on signaling pathways in PCa therapy is shown below. Known effective nutrients include isoflavones, indole-3-carbinol, 3,3'-diindolylmethane, lycopene, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate and curcumin, etc. [4]

Testosterone

Ingredients that promote healthy testosterone levels still dominate the men's health supplement space. In addition to improving sexual function and bone mineral density and increasing free fat mass and strength, testosterone treatment has been shown to improve blood lipids and insulin resistance. Common ingredients that support increased testosterone after supplementation with research evidence include zinc, fenugreek, D-aspartic acid, Tribulus, magnesium, boron, diindolylmethane, Eurycoma longifolia, and Maca extracts, etc. [5]
