Are Bone and Joint Problems Not Just for The Elderly?

Nutraceuticals for Bone and Joint Health

As more people begin to enjoy an active lifestyle and want to maintain mobility as they enter later life, they are paying more attention to joint and bone health from an early age.

It's not just older people who feel this way, even the "weekend warriors" among us (exercising once or twice a week) often feel the strain on our joints.

Having good bones, joints and muscles not only improves our posture, balance, stamina and strength, but also adjusts our mood.

Today, Protheragen Nutraceuticals shares your concerns with the bone and joint health.

Bone Health in Different Populations

Infants and young children

Infants and young children need sufficient vitamin D to maintain rapid bone development, otherwise rickets may occur. Sun exposure and nutritious foods rich in vitamin D and calcium are recommended.

Adolescence

Adolescence is a critical period for bone growth and development, and adequate bone development nutrients should be maintained. Zinc, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, and protein are essential nutrients for bone development in adolescents.

Adults

Calcium deficiency in adults can cause frequent tiredness, weakness, and cramps. It is recommended to consume calcium-rich foods or appropriate supplements every day, and exercise more to maintain bone health.

Middle-aged and elderly

The rate of bone loss increases with age. It is recommended to supplement foods with high calcium content and additional calcium supplements, and get more sunlight to promote calcium absorption and prevent osteoporosis.

Joint Health

As we age, articular cartilage is subject to damage. If not repaired in time, it can also lead to cartilage loss. This not only affects the flexibility of activities, but also may lead to the occurrence of osteoarthritis (OA). For example, joint tissue damage in knee osteoarthritis is shown below. [1] Nutraceuticals are good candidates to help patients prevent OA or use them as a therapeutic adjunct to manage their disease.

Recommended Bone and Joint Health Supplements or Active Ingredients

  • Glucosamine: Glucosamine is an important nutrient for the formation of chondrocytes, helps repair and maintain cartilage, and stimulates the growth of chondrocytes.
  • Vitamin D: Vitamin D is closely related to calcium, and the body needs vitamin D to properly absorb calcium from food.
  • Mineral Supplements (Calcium): Calcium is essential for keeping bones healthy and strong.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: Helps fight inflammation and may be especially helpful for people with rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Vitamin C: Helps reduce the risk of inflammatory arthritis and maintain healthy joints.
  • Polyphenols: Polyphenols are antioxidants that may help reduce joint inflammation and slow the breakdown of cartilage.
  • Avocado/Soybean Unsaponifiables (ASU): ASU is derived from the unsaponifiable residues of avocado and soybean oil and can be used to relieve symptoms of OA.[2]
  • Collagen Hydrolyzates (CHs): The main feature of CH is its amino acid composition, providing high levels of glycine and proline, which are essential for cartilage stability and regeneration. [2]
