Methylsulfonylmethane

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an organosulfur compound. 85% of sulfur-containing compounds in the human body exist in the form of MSM, and sulfur-containing groups are extremely important for the synthesis of keratin, so MSM is an indispensable chemical substance for the human body, and MSM can scavenge free radicals. MSM is now widely used in the field of alternative medicine for patients seeking natural ways to relieve joint pain, reduce inflammatory symptoms, and boost immunity.

Efficacy of MSM

MSM is used orally and topically (applied to the skin) and has been used or studied in the following aspects.

Help relieve symptoms of arthritis such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis or tenosynovitis by reducing pain and stiffness.

  • Has anti-inflammatory properties and increases glutathione levels
  • Reduce muscle damage and stress, and restore speed after exercise
  • Reduce inflammation to relieve allergy symptoms
  • Improve immunity and help maintain health
  • Prevent or treat ulcers
  • For skin problems such as scar tissue, wounds, cuts or abrasions
  • Try treating gastrointestinal problems such as chronic constipation, diverticulosis (a disease of the bowel), hemorrhoids, and more.

Precautions

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding and there is not enough reliable information to determine the safety of taking MSM, stay safe and avoid it.
  • If you are sensitive to MSM, you may experience mild reactions such as nausea, bloating, and stomach problems like diarrhea, and it may also cause minor skin or eye irritation when applied to the skin.
  • Mixing MSM with alcohol can have adverse effects, which can occur when other sulfur-containing drugs are mixed with alcoholic beverages.
  • Before you use it, it is best to seek professional advice from your doctor.

Related Research Information

Effective for gastric mucosal damage

Effective for gastric mucosal damage

Macroscopic and histopathological evaluation of gastric mucosa showed that ethanol/HCl administration produced significant mucosal damage, and MSM (200 and 400 mg/kg, oral) pretreatment could effectively protect gastric mucosa from damage caused by acidified ethanol. Studies have shown that MSM supplementation significantly reduces inflammation in mice with gastric ulcers by inhibiting the release of inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α and IL-6 and increasing glutathione levels. [1]

Anticancer properties

Anticancer properties

Studies have found that MSM can inhibit the growth of gastric, esophageal, liver, colon, skin, and bladder cancer cells. For example, one study measured the cytotoxic effects of MSM on gastrointestinal cancer cell lines. The results showed that MSM has cytotoxic effects on cancer cell lines, and MSM may induce cytotoxic effects on gastrointestinal cancer cell lines through apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. [2] Another mouse study found that MSM can inhibit the Growth of human breast cancer cells. [3]
