Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a widely available dietary supplement designed to reduce pain and cartilage loss from osteoarthritis. Glucosamine, an amino sugar, is an important molecule in the biochemical pathway of glycosylated protein and lipid synthesis. It is also a major component of keratin sulfate and hyaluronic acid, which are present in articular cartilage and synovial fluid, and are reduced in osteoarthritis.

Uses and Effectiveness

Forms

  • Glucosamine hydrochloride
  • Glucosamine sulfate
  • N-Ethyl Glucosamine

Uses

  • Improve joint health and osteoarthritis (OA)
  • Relieve joint pain, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis
  • Promotes digestion and relieves inflammatory bowel disease
  • Reduce inflammation and help reverse autoimmune responses

Effectiveness

  • The use of glucosamine remains widespread, despite conflicting results from numerous controlled trials of glucosamine. We encourage patients to have an open discussion with their physicians to fully understand the controversies surrounding the effectiveness of supplements.
  • OA is a common form of arthritis that is often associated with severe disability and impaired quality of life. A study published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy and toxicity of glucosamine in OA. Studies evaluating Rotta formulations show that glucosamine is superior to placebo in treating pain and dysfunction caused by symptomatic OA.[1]

Precautions

The following are key points about taking glucosamine for consumers' reference only. For your health, please consult your doctor before taking it.

  • Contraindications
    Allergy to shellfish
    Using warfarin or diabetes medication
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: keep safe and avoid use.
Glaucoma: glucosamine may increase pressure in the eye and may make glaucoma worse.
Asthma: glucosamine might make asthma worse.
  • Interactions
    Diabetes medications: reduced effectiveness (theoretical)
Cancer Drugs (Topoisomerase II Inhibitors): block cancer drugs from working
Warfarin (Coumadin): increased risk of severe bruising and bleeding
  • Asthma
Use of warfarin or diabetes medications

Glucosamine

According to a randomized, controlled, single-blind study, the volunteers received an oral supplement containing glucosamine and various antioxidant compounds. The findings suggest that the use of oral supplements containing glucosamine can potentially improve the appearance of visible wrinkles and fine lines compared to a control group that did not take the supplement. However, it does not affect epidermal hydration.[2]

Glucosamine

A study published in the British Medical Journal prospectively assessed the association between habitual glucosamine use and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. After adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, ethnicity, lifestyle factors, dietary intake, drug use, and other supplement use, glucosamine use was associated with a significantly lower risk of total CVD events (hazard ratio 0.85, 95 % CI 0.80 to 0.90), CVD death (0.78, 0.70 to 0.87), coronary heart disease (0.82, 0.76 to 0.88), and stroke (0.91, 0.83 to 1.00).[3]
