Glucosamine is a widely available dietary supplement designed to reduce pain and cartilage loss from osteoarthritis. Glucosamine, an amino sugar, is an important molecule in the biochemical pathway of glycosylated protein and lipid synthesis. It is also a major component of keratin sulfate and hyaluronic acid, which are present in articular cartilage and synovial fluid, and are reduced in osteoarthritis.

The following are key points about taking glucosamine for consumers' reference only. For your health, please consult your doctor before taking it.
According to a randomized, controlled, single-blind study, the volunteers received an oral supplement containing glucosamine and various antioxidant compounds. The findings suggest that the use of oral supplements containing glucosamine can potentially improve the appearance of visible wrinkles and fine lines compared to a control group that did not take the supplement. However, it does not affect epidermal hydration.[2]
A study published in the British Medical Journal prospectively assessed the association between habitual glucosamine use and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. After adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, ethnicity, lifestyle factors, dietary intake, drug use, and other supplement use, glucosamine use was associated with a significantly lower risk of total CVD events (hazard ratio 0.85, 95 % CI 0.80 to 0.90), CVD death (0.78, 0.70 to 0.87), coronary heart disease (0.82, 0.76 to 0.88), and stroke (0.91, 0.83 to 1.00).[3]
